SPORTS MASSAGE AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE
Sports and Remedial Massage
Sports and remedial massage traditionally uses a variety of techniques including deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, as well as standard effleurage and petrissage. At Orca, a sports or remedial massage treatment could also include other modalities such as cupping, kinesiology or non-elastic taping, and IASTM.
It's recommended to start with the Initial Consultation + 1hr Treatment package. You will receive some forms digitally to fill in prior to your visit, and then have an in depth consultation to discuss the issues you are facing. Through history taking, range of movement tests, postural assessment etc. your therapist will be able to identify the root of the problem and come up with the most effective treatment plan for you. Alongside this, we will also discuss any exercises you can do at home to help prevent issues worsening or reoccurring. By booking the extra consultation time, we can be sure that you will receive a full hour's treatment.

What is remedial massage?

Remedial massage is essentially a sport massage but for non-sporty people! By using the same principles of identifying soft tissue disfunction and treating issues using the same techniques as a sports massage would, a remedial massage can be a great tool for dealing with ongoing issues such as back pain, neck pain, and general day to day niggles.

During your consultation, we may be able to identify what is causing the pain and suggest easy adaptations you can make to your lifestyle to manage the problem yourself or slow its return.

How can sports massage help me as an athlete?

Maintenance

Getting regular massages will help you recover from training, as the increase in circulation will help speed up your recovery rate. This reduces your day to day aches and pains, and will help you train harder and reach your goals quicker.

Injury Management and Prevention

By reducing excess muscle tension and keeping your soft tissues in a healthy state, you'll experience an increased range of movement and be less likely to suffer an injury. Imagine your muscles like Blu Tack- cold hard Blu Tack rips easily, but after it has been warmed up and softened it can stretch further.

We can also treat any ongoing issues you may have, and help identify the source of any pain, weakness, or restricted movement.

Pre and Post Event

Massage can play a big part in preparing for a major event. Getting regular massages though out your preparation period will help reduce risk of injury, increase recovery rate, and reduce the strain of intense training on your body. It can also address any excess muscle tension or soft tissue dysfunction that may hamper your performance.
Warm up massage in another great tool, and this can take place directly before the event itself. This will rapidly increase blood flow to the areas treated, excite nervous tissue so it is in a ready and prepared state, and can help mentally prepare you. Massage can also be used between events or races to reduce lactic acid build up in muscle tissues and combat fatigue.
Post even massage can take place directly after and event to assist the body's recovery.
